New pathway to permanent residence for professionals

The Australian government is interested in retaining highly skilled workers to reduce the labor shortage in the country!

From the beginning of the new financial year, legislation changes will come into force and will allow short-term visa SC482 holders (Temporary Skill Shortage visa SC 482 Short-term stream) to apply for a permanent visa SC186 (Employer Nomination Scheme SC186 Temporary Residence Transition stream), when they meet the nomination criteria and their employer is ready to sponsor them for PR visa.

Employers will be able to nominate SC 482 two-year work visa holder if the employee:
  • was in Australia for at least 12 months between February 1, 2020 and December 14, 2021
  • meets all the general criteria of visa SC186 short -term stream
  • currently working in actively and lawfully operating business in Australia

Positive changes also affected SC457 visa holders. In the updated legislation COVID-19 reduced work period and COVID-19 unpaid leave period are also considered.
