Significant limitations to get a student visa while in Australia

Hey guys, extremely important news from the government!

Starting from July 1, 2024, new measures are coming to regulate the number of “permanently temporary” residents in Australia. These changes will directly impact onshore applicants transitioning to student visas from:

  • Visitor visas
  • Graduate visas

The Department has clarified that these measures aim to ensure visa holders are following the purpose of the visa. For instance, Visitor visas should genuinely be used for visiting Australia, and Graduates should seek skilled employment to either transition to permanent residency or leave the country.

Additionally, in last months, the government announced some rules to cut hopping student visa to student visa unless there is credible course progression. From 1 July 2024 Graduates will also face shorter post-study work rights, reduced age limits from 50 to 35 years of age and increased English language requirements.

This is all part of the government’s plan to reduce net overseas migration and build a stronger migration system, as stated in their press release. Moreover, the Department is already taking action by using No further stay condition 8503 on visitor visas.
