More time to change sponsored job in Australia

Hi everyone,

Today’s exciting news is for migrants on temporary sponsored visas 482, 494, and 457, who are facing unfair work or simply dreaming of leaving their employer for a better opportunity.

Starting from July 1, 2024, conditions 8107, 8607, and 8608 are changing. Let’s break down what these numbers mean!

All sponsored workers holding visas 482, 494, and 457 who stop working with their employer will have more time to find a new sponsor, apply for a different visa, or arrange to leave Australia.

Instead of 60 days, workers have 180 days at a time, or a maximum of 365 days during the entire visa period. Moreover, while searching for a new sponsor, they are allowed to work for other businesses without an approved nomination.

However, unless exempt, a visa holder cannot work for another employer unless they have ceased work with their sponsoring employer.

I want to highlight that the changes apply to existing visa holders, as well as those granted a visa on or after 1 July 2024. Any periods a visa holder stopped working for their sponsor before 1 July 2024 will not count towards the new time periods outlined above.

Honestly, I am incredibly happy for the workers who can now escape from unfair employers who force them to work weekends and overtime. But I also genuinely feel for business owners! It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find the right, honest, and qualified staff who will repay all the sponsorship investments in the business!
