Ukrainians in Australia can now apply for a temporary humanitarian visa

On 20 March 2022, Australia government announced that temporary humanitarian visa is available for Ukrainians who have arrived in Australia. This visa will be valid for three years and allow people to work, study and access Medicare, alongside support facilitated by Australia’s experienced Humanitarian Settlement Program providers.

According to official news, 5,000 Ukrainians have received visas to travel to Australia, including skilled, student, tourist and family stream visas. 750 Ukrainians have already arrived in Australia; more are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Once in Australia, Ukrainians will be able to apply for a temporary humanitarian visa. Ukrainian nationals who have arrived on a temporary visa can seek information about visa options via our online enquiry form. Enquiries are generally responded within 24 hours.

More information for Ukrainians:

  1. Ukrainian nationals who do not hold a valid passport should seek advice from the Ukraine State Migration Service or their nearest Ukraine Embassy or Consulate in a neighboring country. If that is not possible in a particular location, a visa application can be submitted without a valid passport.
If you submit an application without a valid passport, you should provide all available identity documentation with the application. A Departmental officer will contact you to discuss your application.
  2. To travel to Australia, a minor must have permission from both parents. If you cannot provide this consent, you can make an application with available documentation. A Departmental officer will contact you to discuss your application.
  3. The Australian Government provided a grant of AUD 450,000 to the community providing support to arriving Ukrainians. We have published contacts of the Ukrainian-Australian communities and other useful information in the guide “What you need to know if you are going to come to Australia” (in the Russian language)
