How to avoid a skilled visa refusal

Let’s take 5 minutes to discuss how you can prevent the refusal of your skilled visa application. We often talk about things to do – how to get an invitation to apply for a visa, discussing strategies, states/territories and visa conditions, etc. However, we haven’t discussed how to avoid visa application refusal yet, so let’s dive into this topic!

Let’s start with a statement: 
Even if your Expression of Interest (EOI) has been selected, and you have an invitation, it does not guarantee you get a visa. For example, in the 21-22 financial year, the refusal rate for the Independent skilled visa SC189 was 13.8%.

Information in EOI = information in visa application

When you declare your personal information in the EOI, you will be trusted and awarded points for all your qualifications/skills/etc. These points are what make you eligible and get you an invitation. If you fail to earn the required points during the application process, or if there are inconsistencies between your EOI and the visa application, your chances of visa approval decrease significantly, and the visa fee will not be refunded/

Stay up-to-date with English test results and skill assessments.

Sometimes an EOI can be in the SkillSelect for years, and applicants may struggle to maintain valid documents within 60 days, and achieve the necessary English level or work experience. Irrelevant documents can lead to visa refusals.

Medical examinations and police clearance certificates are essential.

Remember, if one applicant does not meet the criteria, all applicants will be refused the visa. However, medical tests can be retaken, and additional clarification can be added to existing police clearance certificate (we’ve had such experiences with our clients). By the way, this certificate requirement applies to many Australian visas.

Be mindful of providing correct documents.

The bureaucratic process requires applicants to meet all formalities—this includes getting accurate translations of necessary documents or obtaining the correct form for police clearance certificates (actually many people make mistakes when ordering Australian police clearance certificate). It is also important to consider situations where you may need a translation done by an accredited translator or even notarized.

By being thorough and attentive to details, you can increase your chances of a successful skilled visa application.
