Graduate Visa for international students

I have never posted any details about the graduate visa. It is not fair!

This visa is interesting and promising, it provides many opportunities for everyone who developed an efficient migration strategy and following it.

The Temporary Graduate visa SC 485 is for international students who have completed their course of study in Australia. The time of stay in Australia with Graduate visa can vary from 18 months to 6 years!

The Graduate visa gives full working rights to the main and dependent applicant. Such a visa is a good chance to gain local work experience and increase the chances of obtaining a skilled stream visa (skilled or employer sponsored visa).

Please be aware of upcoming changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa Program
We’re announcing major updates effective from 1 July 2024. Key changes include new age limits, renaming of visa subclasses, modifications to visa durations, and the closure of the Replacement Stream. For a detailed overview of all the changes and how they might affect your migration pathway, please read the dedicated article.

How to get a graduate visa?

  • First, you need to become a full-time international student at a registered education provider (see the CRICOS list).
  • Then you must complete a training course or packaged training course of at least 92 weeks (or 16 months)
  • You must be under the age of 50 at the time of lodging your documents.
  • You can apply for a visa no later than 6 months after completion of your course.
  • You have to pass an English exam with overall 6 IELTS, but not less than 5 in each section.
  • You need to organize medical insurance (with monthly payment), get health assessment and provide police clearance.

Graduate visa streams

There are only 2 streams:

  • Post Study Work Stream (PSWS) – this visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree (at least Bachelor or above). Depending on the level of education, this visa can be issued for up to 4 years. Depending on the location of your institution, you may be eligible for an additional 1-2 years in Australia on a graduate visa.
  • Graduate Work Stream – a visa for a period from 18 months for international students who have recently graduated (Vocational courses) with occupation from SOL and successfully obtained provisional skills assessment.

What else do you need to know about the graduate visa?

  • You can include dependent applicants on your application.
  • You may be eligible for a Graduate visa if you studied remotely during the lockdown and you meet all of the requirements.
  • You can only get this visa once in your lifetime as the primary applicant.
  • You can get an additional graduate visa if you were unable to enter Australia during the lockdown (details on my YouTube video).

We will be happy to help all students and graduates to apply for the visa, and plan your migration pathway from enrolment to obtaining permanent residency!
