Good news for students working in Australia

From 1 July 2023, the Australian Government will increase the permissible work rights limit from 40 hours in two weeks to 48 hours in two weeks.

This modest increase will help students support themselves financially, obtain valuable work experience and contribute to Australia’s workforce needs.

Let me remind you, that Student visa work restrictions were relaxed throughout the pandemic, and completely removed in January 2022 to allow primary and secondary student visa holders to work over their normal limit of 40 hours per fortnight to address workforce shortages. This will end on 30 June 2023.

However, from 1 July 2023, work restrictions for student visa holders will be re-introduced and capped at the increased rate of 48 hours per fortnight. The cap will apply to all international students, no matter when they began studying.

Students must still:

  • maintain their course enrolment
  • ensure satisfactory course attendance, and
  • ensure satisfactory course progress.

Please bear in mind employers are not able to cancel visas, even if students have breached visa conditions. If the student is being exploited in the workplace, please contact the Fair Work Ombudsman as soon as possible for support without fear of visa cancellation.
