Biometric information required

Some Australian visa applicants are required to participate in the biometric screening program by providing the Department with personal information.

The collected biometric data may be checked against the one stored by Australian and international agencies to confirm the visitor’s identity, criminal record, and/ or protection status. If you do not provide your biometrics, your visa application will not be processed.

Biometrics are unique physical data about an individual. The characteristics most used as biometric information to identify a person are:

  • Fingerprints
  • Facial structure
  • Iris (part of the eye)
  • Voice

However, not all applicants are required to provide the same information - for example, some may be asked to photograph and be fingerprinted, while others may be required to provide only one of the two.

PROCESS OF COLLECTING

  • Candidates applyed for visas online may receive a letter informing them to personally appear at a special centre for collecting their biometric data.
  • You must first book your attendance at the biometric centre using the online form on the center’s website and your unique number, which will be sent to you by the Department.
  • On the appointed day, arrive in advance at the specified time and place, and payment can be made on the spot. Bring your printed biometrics registration confirmation letter, your ID, and a biometric requirement letter from the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Biometrics will be collected using a quick, discreet, and non-intrusive process that captures a facial image with a digital camera and a 10 fingerprint scan with a digital finger scanner.

EXCEPTIONS

  • In the case that the applicant is wearing a religious head covering, biometric information may be collected by the same sex employee of the service centre.
  • Fingerprints are not collected from children under 5 and from applicants who physically unable to provide it.
  • If you cut or injure your fingertips, you should inform the Australia Visa Application Centre when the injury has healed.

Not all visas and countries participate in the biometric program:

  • Typically biometric data is requested from offshore applicants applying for temporary visas (student, visitor, work, family, refugee), as well as some permanent family visas.
  • In the event that the applicant is already in Australia, biometrics are not requested. However, there may be exceptions.
  • If you are lodging a visa application in a country included in the biometrics program, regardless of nationality, you might need to provide your biometrics in relation to each visa application you lodge.
