Significant changes in Migration Strategy of Australia

As I mentioned before, the Department announced significant changes in the migration program and even visa requirements – today a document titled “Migration Strategy. Getting migration working for the nation. For Workers. For Businesses. For All Australians” was published.

While we thoroughly study published strategy, I decided to share briefly the most crucial aspects with you. I'll clarify in advance; these changes won't be implemented right away. However, it's essential to consider them when shaping your migration strategy.

So, the new Migration Strategy unveils 25 new initiatives for immediate and future migration measures, including:

  • Increase the minimum English language proficiency for students of all levels and for Graduates.
  • Reduce opportunities to stay permanently temporary in Australia.
  • Introduce new visas and pathways for highly skilled, talented, and well-paid professionals, as well as for targeted workforce needs.
  • Reform points test for skilled visas.
  • Protect migrants from exploitation by implementing legislation, new powers and large penalties as well as post-arrival monitoring and compliance including through coordination with the tax system.
  • Prioritize regional visas and focusing on reducing labor shortages in regional areas.
  • Abolish unnecessary and duplicative 20+ visas to simplify the visa system.

The Department also expects from net overseas migration numbers to fall from 510,000 in the 2022-23 financial year to 375,000 next financial year and 250,000 in 2024-25.
