How to survive during a long flight to Australia

Sometimes a flight to Australia takes forever. Depending your arrival and departure place, your traveling can take over 2 days including transition time.

I have met a few people who were worried about the upcoming long hour traveling. Most of them have little travel experience or limited knowledge of English.

In this article, I prepared some useful tips that I use every single trip!

Flight

  1. Get your flight check-in in advance, especially if you are traveling with cabin luggage only. Thus, you could save time and will be able to arrive at the airport later, as well as you can secure your seats on board (sometimes airlines oversale flight tickets).
  2. It is useful to hang a tag with your contact details on your suitcase, so you can find your lost luggage quicker. This is working if you have multiple trip.
  3. Prepare a travel size of your personal toiletries (up to 100 ml) for cabin luggage. You can take a quick shower at the airport or freshen up on the airplane. Don’t forget about hand sanitizer, as well as the thermal water spray / moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated!
  4. Consider entertainment for children, try to make an agreement with them about the rules on the board, if possible. Wear the same bright colour clothes to find each other quickly in the crowd airport.
  5. Always keep track of the time and set your watch to the current time zone. Remember, tickets always show local time.
  6. At the end of the flight to Australia, you will receive a migration card, which you will need to complete in English and declare some of your belongings. If you are doubting whether your luggage is subject to declaration, it is better to indicate it on the card, you will be rechecked with an appreciation of border control.

Food

  1. The day before the flight, don’t eat heavy (bread, pasta, fatty, smoked) or unusual food for you to avoid discomfort during long sitting in plane.
  2. Limit the consumption of drinks with bubbles and foods that stimulate gas formation (for example, cabbage, many fresh fruits, fast food, rye bread).
  3. At least 24 hours in advance, you can choose meals on board if you have special requests for religious, medical and other reasons. I recommend to prefer protein, vegetables and greens.
  4. Drink plenty of water! You can take your personal water bottle (empty) and fill it up on board.
  5. If you are bringing food on board, please be aware that you must have eaten everything before landing in Australia. If you didn’t have time, I recommend to leave it on the plane: once an apple core in a backpack became a big problem for one tourist.

Clothing

  1. Choose comfortable clothes for travel that do not hinder movement and do not restrict blood circulation (for example, jersey dress, sweatpants, etc.).
  2. If you have vein problems, for flights longer than 2 hours, it is recommended to use compression socks/stockings to stimulate blood circulation.
  3. Consider your outfit according to the weather at your arrival or transit location if you are planning to stay there a bit longer, for example T-shirt/long sleeve + thin jacket/jumper.
  4. Take off your shoes on the plane. Take thick warm and comfortable socks, that will perfectly replace shoes.
  5. During a long flight, travel kits get used to be available on board. They may include sleep masks, inflatable pillows, earplugs and blankets. Have you not received it? Feel free to ask the flight attendant.

Devices and gadgets

  1. Do you actively use your phone/tablet on board? Think about power bank of the appropriate capacity.
  2. Put all devices to a cabin luggage (computers, tablets, books, phones, etc.), chargers and headphones, if you need.
  3. Purchase in advance a universal adapter and extension splitter with your regular socket types. This kind of set will be extremely useful to you in all countries of the world and the first time in Australia.
  4. Download offline maps of cities and airports to your phone so you will know where to go if you find yourself without phone or Internet.
  5. A book, pen and notepad, downloaded movies, audio books or travel guides, a nice playlist – all this stuff will help you pass many hours of flight.

Security

  1. Try to keep all your belongings in your vision, documents and money “closer to the body.” And not only because somebody can steal! Any flight is stressful, lack of sleep and exiting, so you can easily forget the folder with all the documents anywhere.
  2. My luggage has never been lost, so following my experience, the best option is to send the suitcases to the final point of your destination, if it is possible.
  3. Take a photo of your documents in advance. Keep copies on your phone (in case you need to complete any docs during a flight) and in your email (in case you lose something).
  4. Make a list of everything that you plan to bring to Australia in your carry-on and checked baggage or send in a freight container. Check the lists of allowed and prohibited items on the Australian Border Force website in section “Entering and leaving Australia”. Believe me, this is a very serious matter! As they say in the video, which you will see being closer to Australia, “do not apologize, just declare it!”
  5. Write down the address and contact phone of the host, whether it be a hotel or your friends. In case of misunderstanding, you can use their help or ask for an interpreter.
  6. Remember to keep social distance and wear a mask.
