Virtual ceremony to obtain Australian citizenship

As you already know, in current circumstances associated with COVID-19, face-to-face ceremonies to obtain Australian citizenship have been canceled. Today, the Department of the Home Affairs invites all candidates to participate in a virtual ceremony to take the oath of an Australian citizenship. Ceremonies will be arranged only for those currently in Australia.

Ceremonies will be for 15 minutes held during working hours. The department suggests using special software for this virtual event, which will need to be pre-installed on a mobile device or personal computer.

To attend the ceremony, candidates are required to fill out an application in the prescribed manner and provide an identity document. During the ceremony applicants will be repeating the oath aloud after the officer. A citizenship certificate will be delivered by regular mail within 3 weeks from the date of taking the oath.

Fortunately, family members who live with the future citizen will also be able to attend the virtual ceremony together. Applicant should indicate it during the application process.

I sincerely believe that I can help each of you to become an Australian citizen in the future. Have you already begun to learn the words of the oath?

the Citizenship Pledge

From this time forward, under God*,

I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,

whose democratic beliefs I share,

whose rights and liberties I respect, and

whose laws I will uphold and obey.

*you may choose whether or not to use the words “under God”
