Before you start worrying, let me clarify: yes, the government did announce a future reform of the Points Test system in December 2023. However, the actual research and reform plan have been assigned to the Australian National University. So, while the Grattan Institute’s proposal is interesting, it’s not the final word. Anyway, let’s dive into their suggestions.
The current Points Test requires at least 65 points to be eligible for visas 189/190/491. Naturally, the more points you have, the higher your chances. However, any number of points doesn’t guarantee a visa unless you’re a nurse or teacher – they’re at the top of the priority list right now.
Let me give you a couple of examples of high-chance cases under the current system.

As you can see, achieving high points is possible with planning in advance. However, once your application is in Skillselect, you can just wait… and wait… and wait. Or you can look for employer sponsorship, which the Department has been pushing for years. But that’s not so easy for offshore applicants, is it?
To solve visa processing delay and considering all benefits future migrants are supposed to bring to Australia, the Grattan Institute proposed a new selection system. Remember, this is an initiative from a research group, not an official government request, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it does bring me up some interesting points.
Under the proposed system, candidates with 400+ points would get a guaranteed visa invitation. High points would go to young candidates under 30, with high English proficiency, and with high-paying jobs or job offers.

Notice anything? In any case, it pushes candidates to find a job!
