The scope of ANZSCO is all occupations and jobs in the Australian and New Zealand labour markets undertaken for pay or profit, including jobs occupied by people working for themselves.
The categories at the most detailed level of the classification are termed ‘occupations’. These are grouped together into larger groups based on their similarity in terms of skill level and skill specialization.
Obviously, the greater the range and complexity of the set of tasks involved, the greater the amount of formal education and training, previous experience and on-the-job training required to competently perform the set of tasks for that occupation.
Occupations at Skill Level 1 have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
Occupations at Skill Level 2 have a level of skill commensurate with Advanced Diploma or Diploma.
Accordingly, at the next stages, the requirements are gradually reduced. Thus, occupations at Skill Level 5 have a level of skill commensurate with Certificate I or compulsory secondary education.
