7 Common Mistakes When Applying for Skills Assessment

Skills assessment can be a bit complicated process, as applicants need to put in enough effort to collect the correct documents from all workplaces and demonstrate relevant skills that meet Australian requirements and standards.

However, I am convinced that it is always better to make an effort and collect everything you may need and even more rather than to risk providing incomplete package of documents. Raise your hand if you agree with me!

VETASSESS published on their website 7 of the most common mistakes, which we recommend to avoid when applying for a skills assessment.

1

Application without considering a country specific. There are some additional requirements for qualifications obtained from specific regions of the world. These include China, Europe, the Philippines and Lebanon. You should ensure that you understand the requirements for the documents specific to the country of origin.

2

Submitting an incomplete application. Often, candidates do not submit documents that cover a particular period of employment or proof of completing a qualification. You need to provide full evidence not just the most recent ones.

3

Skills assessment not according to Australian standards. If you hold a specific position in your home country, you may find application is unsuccessful because your skills and duties does not meet the educational and/or work requirements for same position in Australia. So always match your occupation with the ANZSCO!

4

Not enough work experience for initial requirements for application. At least a full calendar year of employment within the last five years of the application lodgement date is required.

5

Lodging for priority processing for a second application. Priority processing is only available to new applicants, for applicants who already have a positive skills assessment, and for applicants who are applying for reassessment for a new occupation.

6

Application with no contact details of the applicant, profile or contacts of employers. This can significantly delay the assessment process if the assessor will need to contact the applicant or their employers directly to verify qualification and/or employment information.

7

Submission of documents without original documents or without translation into English. It is always necessary to provide copies of the originals, as well as an English translation by a registered translation service.

Guys, keep in mind that your application for skills and work experience assessment will be considered much faster if you avoid mistakes, collect the correct and complete set of documents and arrange it in accordance with the requirements of the assessing organization.
